We have some exciting news to share about the ACT that will help you make informed decisions about your test preparation journey. The ACT has just announced some significant changes that will take effect next year. As always, World Class Tutoring is here to ensure you’re fully prepared.
What Are the Changes?
Starting next year, the ACT will undergo several key enhancements. You can read more about them from the ACT’s official announcement.
- Shortened Test Duration: Starting in 2025, the ACT will be 2 hours long, matching the duration of the new digital SAT. This change aims to reduce the fatigue and stress often associated with longer exams.
- More Time per Question: The new format will provide more time per question, making the test a bit less stressful and allowing students to think through their answers more carefully.
- Flexibility in Test Format: Unlike the SAT, which is now entirely digital, the ACT will continue to offer a paper-and-pencil option. This means students who prefer the traditional testing method can still choose it.
When Will These Changes Occur?
The new version of the test will appear first in online national testing in April 2025. Paper-based national testing will remain the same as it is currently, so be careful which you register for. September 2025 is when the paper-based test will ALSO reflect the new format. This information is subject to change and we hope to have updates and more specific information soon from ACT.
Why These Changes Matter
These changes are probably ACT’s response to recent modifications in the SAT format. Many students prefer the SAT due to its shorter duration and more generous time per question. The ACT has answered those student concerns by reducing the length of the English and Reading passages, shortening the math section, and making the Science section optional.
With these new adjustments, the ACT is now a stronger competitor to the SAT, offering similar advantages while retaining the option for a paper-and-pencil format, which can be a major benefit for some students.
